I don’t intend for this to be a parenting blog. There are already many good ones. But after your child is born, what else can be expressed other than what that is, and what it feels like?
I think many writers shy away from writing about things like this because in order to write well – goes the writer’s dictum – one needs tension and drama to make a story move forward, to keep the reader engaged. The process of a child being born, the medical situation, may have some inherent drama, but the feeling of seeing your child for the first time is dramaless. It is pure joy, an elation so powerful that it’s overwhelming, and any writer will tell you that pure joy is hard to describe, fleeting by nature, and often sounds trite, rarely moving the reader.
I can’t describe what it feels like to become a father. Many have tried. But it’s too much.
