Wife and I were lying in bed. She was nursing baby. I was looking at our dog curled up on the floor and reading. I looked over at wife and she was crying.

“What’s wrong?” I said.

“Nothing bad,” she said. “Let me put him down first.”

She laid baby in the bassinet, laid back down in bed, and curled up in the covers.

“What’s wrong?” I said.

“It’s just– I thought I loved him before but now I really do. Just now this feeling came like a warmth or something, out of nowhere.”

“Wow, honey.”

“Then I felt a little guilty because he will die someday and we’re the ones that gave him life. Ya know?”

“Well, yes, but–”

“It just doesn’t seem like it should be that way.”

“No, you’re right, it doesn’t.”
